The first thing that usually comes to mind when you think of martial arts is physical movement. It’s the techniques, moves and balance. Martial arts teaches you a high degree of control over your body.

The mind controls the body, not the other way around. If you get your mind under control, it will program your body with what to do. The perfected techniques of a martial artist are the result of habits.

Martial arts is about self-control.

Many areas of life need self-control. Whether physically, mentally, spiritually, or socially, self-control is the key to keeping yourself . Healthy. Right from wrong.

If you don’t do control yourself, someone else will. If you’re young, your parents correct your behavior by teaching you right from wrong. If you’re older, there are plenty of people who will “control” you if you can’t control yourself (think police, IRS, landlord). Don’t give others the opportunity to be in charge of what you should be in charge of yourself. Learn self-control.

Martial arts is all about self-control. We need it to perfect our technique so that it will function correctly if we ever need it. We also need self-control because martial arts techniques really can hurt others, and should only ever be used when truly needed.
